  • Are fire pits and outdoor fireplaces legal in Rochester?

Yes, while there are certain regulations about how far they must be located from your home and neighboring homes, fire pits, and outdoor fireplaces are legal in Rochester, MN.

  • Will your snow removal hurt my grass?

We do everything possible to mark your property in order to avoid damage from plows and other equipment. If our equipment damages your yard, we will gladly repair it in the spring.

  • Are forms set to do concrete landscape curbing?

No, Creative Curb Appeal utilizes a machine that extrudes the concrete into a continuous concrete border. This allows us to customize your job to your satisfaction!

  • Will the color fade over the years?

We use integral colors in our mixture, and follow up each install by applying a high-grade sealer to prevent fading. Resealing every couple of years is a good maintenance practice that will keep your colors true.

  • Will the curbing break?

The Creative Curb Appeal installation team cuts "expansion joints" every 18-25 inches, which allows your curbing to breathe and expand with minimal cracking. We also use additives in the mixture which minimize shrinking during the curing process.

  • What colors are available? Can you match my home color?

We use high-quality integral colors in our decorative curbing products. At the time of your free estimate, you can choose from a chart of many available hues. The actual color of the finished curb may vary slightly from the chart depending on curing time, humidity, and temperature. For this reason, we suggest you choose a color that complements your existing color scheme, rather than trying to find an exact match to your home's exterior.

  • Concrete is so permanent. What if I need to repair something underground?

Expansion (also called control) joints are placed in the curb at installation to control cracking. The curbing can be broken clean at these joints by applying leverage. Once the section is free, simply remove it, complete your repairs, and place the section of concrete edging into its original position.

  • How will replacing my existing edging with curbing affect my landscaping?

You will need to remove existing edging from your landscaping. The installer will cut a 9" or 12" wide strip (depending on curb design) of sod away and prepare the ground. If you have any sprinkler heads on or around the borders, consult your installer to find out if they need to be relocated. In most cases, we can work around them. We make an effort to place the curb close to the grass edge during extrusion, which means that the grass will simply fill in up to the curb in most cases.

  • Will I be able to mow up against my curbing?

Your curbing will be as strong as 2800 psi and will withstand your walk-behind or riding mower's weight to ride along the edge of the curbing.

  • What are the advantages of continuous concrete borders over other edging solutions?

    1. Compared to wood or timber installation, there is no threat of termites or rotting. Keep in mind that now many homeowners' associations are banning wood installations because of these problems.

    2. Compared to metal edging you simply don't have the rusting, separation, and above-ground heaving. All these lead to long-term maintenance costs not found with Creative Curb Appeal brand concrete edging.

    3. Compared to plastic edging, you also don't have separation and above-ground heaving. In addition, you don't have the stigma and cheap look associated with a plastic product.

    4. Finally, compared to brick and stone installations, you don't have the crumbling, cracking, and grass that grows between stones/bricks. Additionally, in most cases, concrete edging is less expensive than other masonry alternatives.

  • Do I have to be there during the installation?

We ask you to be there at the very beginning during the time we mark the outline of the installation if the outline process has not been performed previous to the installation date. Once we get approval for the outline, in most cases you can feel free to leave to attend to other business and get on with your day. Of course, if you would like to stay for the duration of the installation, this is fine also.

  • Will the installation ruin my lawn or landscape?

This is the beauty of continuous concrete edging. It doesn't involve the use of large excavating equipment or the building of forms before pouring the concrete. The machines used are lightweight, and we use double-wheel wheelbarrows to transport the concrete. The only effect on your lawn is that there is a swath of turf removed that is about one foot wide (see installation page) in which the curb edging is installed. This turf can be reused in bare spots on your lawn, or we will remove and dispose of it for a small fee. After the installation is complete, any slight spillover along the outside edge of the curb edging is removed leaving a "clean" installation that you will be proud of.

  • How long are the pieces and where do I buy them?

You can't buy them. The breaks you see every 18-25" are expansion/control joints. Every curb job is mixed and extruded in one continuous piece on-site using our curbing machines. All designs and colors are unique and specific to your desires.

  • How long does the concrete curbing last?

The curbing will last many years with proper care and maintenance. We apply a commercial-grade acrylic clear sealer to all colored and stamped curbs after installation. Sealing once every couple of years will help assure a long and healthy life for your concrete border.

  • How deep do you dig and what type of base do you use?

We dig between 1 1/2-2 inches deep and 9 or 12 inches wide. This is done without damaging your landscape beds or shrubbery. We cut an even path along your landscape beds to ensure a level installation. We will sometimes add a small layer of topsoil or sand under the curb to ensure the level of the curb in areas where sudden dips may occur. If the ground should shift or settle in any way over time, the control joints help control the cracking.

  • What about the winter and ground movement?

What makes concrete curbing so attractive is the fact that it's one continuous piece of concrete. Individual blocks or bricks will shift over time and in the winter. Our curbs are mixed with a fiber mesh reinforcement along with air entertainment, designed to take the place of rebar or steel. We also install control joints every 18-25", therefore if the ground moves, the curb will crack at these joints.

  • Is the color painted or stained to the curb?

All of the colors are added to the concrete during mixture. There is no painting or staining. Our colors will not flake off or disappear over time. All of our colors are mixed into the concrete during the mixing process. A sealer will aid in the lifetime of the color. We recommend sealing the curb every 2 years.

  • Are you limited to a design layout, such as with timbers?

Concrete curbing is ideal for almost any terrain. A small concrete extruding machine is very easily maneuvered, thereby providing the design flexibility needed for your specific lawn type. It curves, circles, or extrudes straight lines to allow you any design your heart desires. We encourage the homeowner to see the awe of the process. It is definitely an amazing sight to see the before-to-after transformation that takes place within just a few hours.

  • How effective is this Concrete Curb in keeping out grass?

Extruded concrete curbing has a proven track record at preventing sod from entering your landscape beds. Your constant (losing) fight to keep sod out of your flower beds ended with this invention. You also do not have weeds growing in between this edging since it is one continuous piece, nor can the sod grow under it if it is prepared correctly. There are a few different molds (shapes) to choose from. The curb is actually 6" wide. Our molds are designed high enough to keep sod from growing through it, and also high enough on the back to retain your bed covering, such as mulch. As long as your area is prepared properly and your grass clippings do not go into your flower bed, you will not have creeping sod in your flower bed area any longer!

  • Can children or pets damage the curb?

Describe the item or answer the question so that site visitors who are interested get more information. You can emphasize this text with bullets, italics or bold, and add links.
  • How do I care for my concrete curbing, and what kind of warranty does it have?

    See Warranty and Care Sheet.

  • Will the curbing ever break?

The Creative Curb Appeal installation team cuts "expansion joints" every 18-25 inches, which allows your curbing to breathe and expand with minimal cracking. We also use additives in the mixture which minimize shrinking during the curing process.

  • What colors can I use for my decorative concrete edging? Can you match my home color?

Creative Cub Appeal uses high-quality integral colors in our decorative curbing products. At the time of your free estimate, you can choose from a chart of many available hues. The actual color of the finished curb may vary slightly from the chart depending on curing time, humidity, and temperature. For this reason, we suggest you choose a color that complements your existing color scheme, rather than trying to find an exact match for your home's exterior.
